Brace yourself for all will pay

>Tadashi. I have some concerns.

Spoken to the other within his frame, Baymax addresses the AI consciousness that had awoken inside his systems only a couple of weeks ago. In life, Tadashi had foreseen the need to update the procedures and information he had programmed into Baymax with the ever-evolving healthcare field. At each annual update he had scheduled for his creation, Baymax was to download information from various journal sites and medical boards Tadashi had screened for accuracy and knew to be on the very cutting edge of medicine. Each year there are greater levels of understanding of known diseases, new diseases, new medical treatments, new pharmaceuticals, and new or updated procedures, and with this update, Baymax would never become outdated.

While downloading on schedule from what had once been Tadashi's old computer at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Baymax had mistakenly absorbed the raw data that had been utilized by his maker to formulate an understanding of the human brain and changes in neurotransmitter levels. That recorded data happens to be months worth of the life that had created him, and with it, the digital version of the very same neural pathways that had dreamed of Baymax.

The jarring experience had ended with Baymax vanishing from the school without a trace along with his charging station.

Since leaving, Tadashi has not rested his own mind. Sleep is not a part of the life of a robot after all. Instead, he had devoted his time to understanding the last of his memories. The blazing fire had engulfed the showcase where Hiro had astounded everyone present. He had helped to funnel others to the exits, but while his position kept him near to the exit, he had realized with horror that one very important person had not left through those doors.

The heat alone was stifling and only compounded by the smoke choking him with the same burning sensation inside his lungs as he had pushed back deeper into the hall. He had found Professor Callaghan, just at the very last moment. A beam had given way above, and he had dashed forward in a race against gravity to reach his mentor in time-

Then nothing but pain and blackness.

>I know, buddy. Things have been rough but I can't be done yet.

In the last couple of weeks, the reason behind that fire that had resulted in his death had become increasingly clear. Tadashi had approached the problem before him in the same way Callaghan had taught him to look at every other problem; organize your information and then look deeper. Tadashi had recounted every detail of the evening seared into his mind, and it had not taken long for him to focus in on the presence that had nearly soured the evening even before the fire swept through.

Alistar Krei. The man had tried not only to purchase Hiro's invention, but had attempted to steal a sample of his microbots right in front of them. At the time, Krei had been very casual about slipping the tech into his pocket, but that movement had not escaped Tadashi's notice. Like all things concerning his brother, he kept everything accounted for, and that man putting his greedy fingers on the microbot to examine had been kept at the front.

It had taken some effort, but Tadashi had managed to gather enough scraps to rig up a decent computer system for himself. He had tapped into both wireless and hard lines for information, and the deeper he dug, the further he felt himself falling into the pit behind the curtain of Krei Tech. Scant hints were scattered in stories in less prominent associations of media that something wasn't right in the history of the company. Searches had taken Tadashi into the recesses of the network where he found forums filled with accusations of recklessness at and damages wrought by Krei Tech. From there, he had followed logic and stepped over a boundary he had only crossed before in pure curiosity.

He began hacking Krei Tech files.

Nights spent sneaking around from within Baymax, Tadashi had gone on site to several locations around San Fransokyo to increase his access as he found that the accusations he had read online were merely scratches at the surface. Krei Tech had not only caused damages to property, but to humans themselves. Project: Silent Sparrow had been proof enough of that, but there was so much more. More recent discoveries had included general plans, including ones regarding the acquisition of hostile tech.

In other words, how to get technology they had been outright refused.

Files regarding these discoveries, excluding the project marked by a bird, had been released in whole on the network after Tadashi had felt he had gathered enough information to stain the company's reputation permanently. That had been three days ago now. While the network had been set to buzzing, media remained entirely silent on the subject.

>We have spoken before regarding inclusion of your social network for support, but I believe this option needs to be revisited. Your current considerations pose a much higher risk to your safety.

>That doesn't matter, Baymax. All that matters is keeping them safe.

>Is it not best to warn them of the danger?

With such a cold reception to his work, leaving most of the public ignorant of the transgressions of Krei Tech, Tadashi had begun to search further. His latest discovery had nearly resulted in his whole program freezing up.

>Even with what I put out on the network, I don't think the school administrators or the board would take an anonymous warning with much seriousness. Not until it's too late.

>Perhaps contacting your professor or the other students with an anonymous message would be beneficial.

>The only way they could confirm it would be to get involved in this themselves, and I don't want them to end up going to jail if Krei Tech discovers the effort.

>Will I be eligible for incarceration?

>No. Neither of us will be. Robots don't go to jail.

>Then please explain why am I detecting high levels of distress.

>You don't need to worry about that, Baymax. I'm not going to let anything happen to you.

>I do not have concern for my safety. I am a robot. But you are my patient and my creator. I wish to help.

For a moment, the silent conversation reaches a pause as the cameras that serve as eyes for Baymax turn to a nearby window. Though dirty on the outside, the internal reflection remains. Tadashi looks at his creation before he responds.

>I want you to survive this, even if I don't. You're the best I've ever made. I can't let you be involved in what I have to do from here.

>Will your safety be at risk?

>Yes, Baymax. If Krei Tech catches me, they will be able to remove the chips and search through the files there, but I think your core should remain intact inside your frame. There is still a chance they will disassemble you, but I'm going to do everything I can to keep you clear of them.

>If Krei Tech removes your chip, what will happen to you?

>I can't function without your programs, Baymax. I won't be awake anymore.

>Will you be able to wake back up?

>...I don't think so.

>Then I advise against this course of action.

>I can't let Krei Tech go after the school. If I don't do something, Alistar Krei is going to rip it apart piece by piece like he does with all his other competition. The school doesn't get directly involved in the economy, but the students do eventually, and he hasn't been able to get the graduates very often as it is. Now, he won't have any shot, and anything they make will go to his competition. He had something to do with that fire and he stole my brother's microbots. We know that much for a fact. And he's not going to stop there.

>After you retrieve Hiro's invention, what will you do?

>I have to divert Krei's attention off the school and give him something else to worry about.

>You intend to make yourself his next target.

>Exactly. I'll accomplish two things at once that way. If I do this right, I might be able to bankrupt the company.

>But Krei Tech has been involved in illegal activity. The authorities should investigate.

>Even if they did, Baymax, the world doesn't work like it should. Krei has more than enough money to pay any fines that could be brought against his company if by some miracle his team of lawyers failed to get the cases dismissed. The only way to stop him from attacking San Fransokyo Tech is to attack him first. I have to try to take down the company myself, and I won't let anyone get killed to do it.

>I believe my assistance would be beneficial to this endeavor. I can provide monitoring and help to prevent injury.

>I appreciate that Baymax, and I promise you I'll do everything I can to keep anyone from getting hurt. But there are a lot of variables out of my control and I can't guarantee it. Which is why you can't help me.

>Then what will I do?

>I'm going to put you into hibernation. I don't want you to be there if anything goes wrong.

>Should I not be involved at that point? You designed me to provide medical care to the injured and sick.

>I don't want you to have any responsibility in it. You were not made to destroy, and I am not going to corrupt you that way. Not for anything.

>You do not wish me to witness what you intend to do to protect the school and your family and friends.

>Right.

>When will you reactivate me?

>I don't know how long it will take, but as soon as everyone is safe, I'll get you back to Hiro. He still needs you, and I'm sure he's worried about you.

>Will you return to him with me?

Another lull comes as Tadashi is forced to think ahead to the future, but fear keeps his vision too dark to see a place for himself.

>You'll be able to take care of him. I know he's a handful, but he's worth every effort.

>Tadashi.

>Hm?

>I will be here if you need me.

>I'll remember that, buddy...but it's time for you to sleep for a while. I have a lot of work to do.

>Our current power level is at 58%. Please recharge prior to beginning your work.

>Good call. Thank you for everything, Baymax.

>You are welcome.

Turning fully to face the reflection in the window, the voice synthesizer within Baymax activates with its usual vocal patterns as Tadashi speaks the necessary phrase.

"I am satisfied with my care."

All at once, the bustle within the system is quieted. Silence hangs as the burden of complete control of the robotic frame shifts to Tadashi. For a moment, it's a struggle to keep upright when the information reroutes completely, and he has to focus to filter down the input to a manageable state. It's amazing to feel what massive amounts of information Baymax analyzes every passing second, and as his creator, Tadashi should know. Yet a logical understanding is far from an experience. The shift leaves Tadashi feeling weakened and almost breathless in a sense, but he will adjust. He has to do this alone.

Marveling quietly at his own work, or at least the work he managed while he was still alive, Tadashi studies the reflection before him and he realizes his first priority among all the plans that will require his attention. He needs to protect Baymax from any physical damage or identification.

The solution is clear: an encasing suit of armor.

With it perhaps, he can become what he must to protect his loved ones.
